To build or repair all types, sizes, and shapes of jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies.  Assemble and try out complex tools and dies on manufacturing equipment.  Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques.

Reads and interprets blueprints or works from verbal or written instructions or from the part to be copies or fitted.

Plans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants, and machine tool feeds and speeds.

Determines specifications for inspection of work, using precision measuring and gauging tools, performing required inspection before, during, and after machining.

Performs hand operations involved in producing jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies.  Uses hand tools of the trade.

Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies.  Sets up, runs off, and tests dies to produce a product to specifications, tracing die difficulties to their source and correcting same.

May work with product designers providing input to manufacturing capability on newly formed products.

Uses mills, lathes, drill press, and grinders to prepare material for tooling jobs, such as making simple molds and nesting fixtures.

Programs CNC (G-Code) setup and run 

Trade school degree or 1-2 years tool and die making experience.

General machining experience and machine programming knowledge.    

Ability to use hand tools, calipers, mill, and drill press.  Knowledge of mills, lathes, grinders, and CNC machines. 

Able to read blueprints, drawings, and engineering information.

The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.

Able to communicate well verbally, and in writing, if necessary.
