Position Summary:

As key member of the Itasca leadership team, this role serves as right-hand person to Shift Supervisor, leading the floor to safely deliver a quality product and reinforcing the messages of safety, continuous improvement, market rate of demand (MRD) and safety, quality, delivery and cost (SQDC) priorities to all employees.  Performs duties to set-up and operate extruders and punch presses ensuring continuous compliance with customer specifications. Assists in teaching and training employees on procedures and trouble-shooting machinery.

This is an hourly position. Standard work hours are 11pm to 7am, Tuesday to Saturday.

Primary Responsibilities:

Talent Leadership

  • Set the standard for the shift and the plant that safety is our number priority and every accident is preventable. 
  • Lead up to 15 employees engaged in production activities in conjunction with the Shift Supervisor or in Shift Supervisor’s absence.
  • Identify, manage and develop employees to maximize individual and shift effectiveness.  Foster a culture of safety, engagement and accountability.
  • Coach through feedback and development and follow change management practices to effectively to plan, implement and evaluate change.
  • Train new and existing employees to safely follow procedures and machine trouble shooting.
  • Acts as supervisor when supervisor is not in the plant (on vacation, in training, etc.) to serve as a successor to the Supervisor role.

Supervisory Assistance

  • Follow safety rules and keep work area in a clean and orderly condition. 
  • Back up supervisor for input of daily shift production numbers and quality control data into manufacturing software.
  • Involvement and leadership in continuous improvement measures.
  • Resolve emergencies and oversee security of the facility in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Support sharing of cross-plant best practices as well as safety, 6S, and efficiency initiatives.
  • Reassign employees to other machines in order to meet customer production requirements.

Daily Operations

  • Start-up and shut-down plant as necessary.  Assist with new equipment evaluation and start-up as requested.
  • Run machinery and equipment for production. Troubleshoot operating problems on all equipment.
  • Adjust or oversee adjustment to machines.
  • Change dies as necessary.
  • Manage material flow.
  • Load grinders in Regrind Room as necessary.
  • Use hoses to unload material from rail cars.
  • Print required product labels based upon production schedule.
  • Inspect finished product for compliance to customer specifications.
  • Oversee inventory levels of supplies to assure constant production and notify Shipper/Receiving Leader to place orders for new supplies.
  • Make recipe/program changes in equipment.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience leading a team in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and possess strong leadership skills – including sound decision making.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in machine operation required.
  • Experience in basic computer skills (MS office).
  • Ability to use measuring instruments and hand tools.
  • The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job.  Physical requirements include: good speaking, hearing and vision ability, excellent manual dexterity, ability to lift and carry 25 to 60 pounds (on average) up to 3 hours a shift.
