This Job Description is intended as a general statement of the nature and level of work performed by the job holder. It is not intended to be an exhaustive representation of all responsibilities, duties and skills.

Responsible for assembly, testing and calibration of the Company’s Transducer products to ensure they meet the required performance and quality levels including standard, custom and products returned for repair. In addition, has the initiative for driving operational change and supporting the Line Manager for all aspects of Operational activities including inventory management, health and safety and personnel development.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Safe Working Environment - To ensure that only trained or authorised personnel are using hand tools, fixtures, power tools or operating hazardous equipment i.e. overhead cranes or material handling equipment. That the area is organised for optimum product flow, with inventory managed (correcting stock inaccuracies and cycle counting), stored and protected with known replenishment processes to support a safe and efficient working environment. Also that there is correct use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and product protection (ESD) - where appropriate, with planned housekeeping (daily, weekly, monthly) and that agreed high 5S standards are maintained throughout.
  • Resource Management& Personnel Development - To ensure unplanned indirect activities are minimised by ensuring working hours are adhered to  and minimising time away from place of work. Also  recognising development opportunities for all area personnel.
  • Technical Support and Product Understanding - To accept responsibility for quality of own work and to ensure that all products are assembled, tested and calibrated in line with latest test procedures, that all processes are completed using latest drawings, BOM’s and local WI’s etc. To be the technically competent for fault finding and diagnostics and a reliable contact for Operational Engineering, Quality, Purchasing, Planning and Service
  • Customer Focused - To ensure customer satisfaction by ensuring that product quality and delivery is achieved and, in the exceptional circumstance of a delay, that proactive communication and initiative is taken to minimise any delay (production or repaired product). Also that departmental metrics (FTPR, 5’S, Labour Recovery) are understood and are committed to continuous improvements.
  • Departmental Administration - To ensure that personal performance management is completed within agreed timescales and that own objectives are monitored routinely and are self owned. Also that all general administration is completed promptly i.e. planned and unplanned absence, reporting, overtime management, FTPR reporting, MRB’s, ESR’s, MSW’s etc. appropriate. Also that all H&S documentation is understood and adhered to  - incidents and accidents reporting, risk assessments, COSHH regulations. Skills matrix’s etc. and their whereabouts are known and adhered to.

Qualifications:

Key Competencies and Skills

  • A detailed knowledge of general and “lean”, manufacturing process.
  • To carry out fault diagnosis to highest level and ability to read and understand engineering, assembly and manufacturing drawings.
  • Computer literate with the competence in Microsoft packages such as outlook and Excel
  • Of good physical health and fitness enabling the handling, moving and distributing of awkward and / or heavy items.
  • To understand and support continuous imprvements in processes and products.
  • To support and encourage team working and individual development.

Qualifications

Full relevant training will be provided, but as a minimum the following qualifications would be advantageous but not prescriptive.

  • 4 level Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering
  • Graduate in Engineering/Manufacturing

Key Experiences

  • The candidate should be able to prove experience with assembly and disassembly of mechanical componentry or machinery.
  • The candidate should be able to prove experience of testing electromechanical products or machinery, including fault diagnosis and product improvement ideas.
  • Lean Manufacturing – Process mapping, 5’S, Poke Yoke etc.

Key KPIs/other performance measurements

  • Ability to train and understands Instron’s business systems –IFS and Agile, to carry out their day to day activities with the aim of achieving the departmental targets as set by the Line Manager or Operations Manager.
     
  • Demonstrate development skills by having the ability to communicate at all levels, with a positive and motivational influence, promoting current business philosophies, including Toolbox, 5S and On-Time performance and core Instron values etc. for all personnel through the above activities and processes.
     
  • To achieve required performance standards and objectives with the ability and willingness to undertake a wide variety of tasks as specified by Line Manager or Operations Manager.
     
  • On Time management in all aspects
