Senior Software Quality Assurance Engineer

This role involves designing and implementing a wide range of verification and validation procedures to ensure that Instron’s software and firmware meet required specifications and fulfil their intended purpose.


  • Provide the technical lead for the SQA function within the business and across other Instron divisions.
  • Create detailed, comprehensive, and well-structured test plans and test cases to determine reliable, safe, and high quality performance of new and existing software and firmware products.
  • Review requirements, specifications, and technical design documents during new product development and provide timely and meaningful feedback
  • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate all testing activities and liaise with project managers to plan project schedules.
  • Design and develop test tools and automation scripts to facilitate data gathering and test method execution.
  • Identify, record, document, and track bugs, and perform regression testing when bugs are resolved.
  • Ensure conformance to documented and established standards under both normal and abnormal conditions.
  • Provide support to manufacturing and technical support when introducing new software/firmware products issues or customer issues related to software/firmware arise.
  • Maintain SQA software and hardware, including testing tools, test rigs, complete systems, and accessories.
  • Evaluate new computer models, operating systems and any other third party hardware that communicates with Instron software and firmware.
  • Stay up-to-date with new testing tools and test strategies
  • Provide regular progress reports to the group manager.



  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a software quality assurance or software development role.
  • Proven experience in a product development environment for high quality commercial software products.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer hardware and applications running on Windows operating systems.
  • Experience of working with embedded systems.
  • Ability to provide in-depth evaluation and analysis of complex technical issues.
  • Familiarity with C++ and/or C# development, ideally using Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to lead and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Capable of working proactively with individuals at all levels, and from a broad range of backgrounds.
  • Highly analytical with excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to write clear, concise, and comprehensive test plans and test cases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


  • Hands-on experience with automated testing tools.
  • Solid knowledge of Core Python.
  • Successful use of Scrum/Agile development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps and GIT or TFVC source control.
  • Knowledge and experience of:
    • using transducers with machine control systems.
    • developing automated software testing tools in a commercial environment.
    • designing and assembling electronic test circuits/jigs for software testing.
    • working in the Test & Measurement industry


  • Knowledge of the basics of materials science and/or an engineering background would be highly beneficial.
  • Experience of developing automated software testing tools would be a distinct advantage.


  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent Microsoft certification.
  • At least 5 years’ relevant software quality or development experience.
