This position is based within Instron’s European Customer Back Innovation Engineering Department and will be located at our European headquarters in High Wycombe, UK.


The Principal Mechanical Engineer will oversee all phases of technical projects and oversee products from development through to production. They conduct engineering studies and investigations and prepare reports for company leadership.

The role will involve the responsibility for providing guidance and oversight to multiple teams working on numerous products or supporting current products with long range goals in mind.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supports the Technical Director to set and review the engineering wide performance objectives, with focus on Technical goals to efficiently deliver the Roadmap, Long-range plans and Strategy of the DS business.
  • Support the Technical Director with creation and implementation of the short and long-term strategy in terms of technological growth.
  • Participates in creating new products and services where technology is concerned using project management processes and in partnership with the Program team.
  • Owns technological solutions and their life cycle.
  • Keeps up-to-date with industry trends and developments.
  • Motivates and mentors engineers and creating a space where they can ask questions and voice their concerns.
  • Is transparent with the Program teams about challenges, failures, and successes.
  • Writes progress reports and delivering presentations to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Organises peer review within expertise and approve Work packages as part of project management process.
  • Is responsible for technical development of engineering team.
  • Writes patents
  • Responsible for the intrinsic safety and compliance of the overall design
  • Is a Safety officer and support Chief Safety officer in continuous improvement, promotion of Safety companywide.

Key Competencies

  • Core engineering skills, with a particular flair for theoretical and analytical approach to design.
  • Appreciation of interaction between other expertise.
  • Ability to use appropriate CAD tools for tasks such as SolidEdge.
  • Ability to creatively influence the work of other Engineers
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with enthusiasm
  • Ability to lead the review of specifications
  • Ability to inter-relate to other disciplines

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors/Masters Degree in Engineering expertise
  • Minimum of 12 years post-graduate experience in industry.
