The Principal Research Analyst will report to the Technology Research Manager within the ITW Innovation Center. This position will be responsible for producing intelligence reports on emerging technologies that are of strategic importance to ITW.  The position will be a combination of primary/secondary research, analysis, interpretation, and reporting to senior management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with business units to identify macro trends, analyze and segment markets, assess customer needs, and evaluate growth opportunities.
  • Investigates technology trends, maturity, differentiation, and landscapes relevant to our business unit’s growth initiative.
  • Provide system solutions to support the needs of industrial manufacturing business units over a wide range of industries. 
  • Monitor and evaluate technologies in their subject area
  • Scope, manage 3rd party research resources with deep technical knowledge
  • Ability to demonstrate proof of principal using simulation and modelling
  • Ensures the timely and efficient completion of multiple assignments to achieve overall business objectives
  • Rapidly evaluate ideas, suggest solutions, and work with business units to validate concepts to sometimes-urgent problems.
  • Masters degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering combined with 10 or more years of related experience.
  • Action-oriented technical leader able to apply systematic processes and sound judgment to complex issues
  • Strategic as well as practical experience in the development of embedded connected products
  • Comprehensive understanding of control systems theory, system modeling, and simulation, vision systems and algorithms, sensor technologies, data analysis, wired and wireless communication protocols
  • Detailed understanding of sensing methods, technologies, processing algorithms, and their usage and interface to embedded systems
  • Experience with systematic approaches to design of experiments intended to isolate the variables of interest in a complex system.
  • Solid understanding of common wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Wireless USB, and cellular) and communication protocols
  • Solid understanding of Industrial Internet of Things as applied to B2B and manufacturing ecosystems
  • Experience with embedded systems debug and test tools such as ICE, DVMs, Oscilloscopes, Logic Analyzers, and Network Spectrum Analyzers.
  • Proven C, C++, or Python development skills working in embedded Linux and Microsoft environments
  • Exposure to mainstream communication protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, XML, JSON, MQTT) and device security (IPsec, TLS, Blockchain)
  • Functional understanding of the most common wired interfaces such as RS-485, I2C, USB, SPI, CAN/LIN
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink modeling and simulation tools
  • Willingness to travel up to 15%, both domestic and international

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build positive relationships and communicate effectively at all levels up through engineering business management
