Primary Objective:

To research, design and produce standard and non-standard technical user assistance content in the assigned area(s) of specialization.  Documentation subjects can be electrical, hydromechanical, software, or a combination thereof.

Partner with team members, engineers, software developers and simulation and production software and systems to create user assistance content.

Major Areas of Accountability:

1.   Follows department procedures as required to design and produce the technical documentation for assigned projects:

  • Determining the scope of work
  • Determining time to complete assignments
  • Identifying or creating a documentation plan
  • Researching the product or project
  • Determine the most logical manner to present information for greatest user comprehension
  • Preparing a draft of the documentation
  • Submitting the documentation for technical and editorial review
  • Producing a final copy of the documentation
  • Scheduling and publishing the documentation

2.   Demonstrates conformance to established guidelines and standards for the design and production of technical documentation as described in the prescribed technical documentation style guides, department quality management procedures, and other prescribed guidelines, standards, and procedures.

3.   Meets scheduled completion date and budget:

      •     Scheduling and managing personal workload to ensure projects are completed

      •     Ensuring that resources and support services are available

      •     Keeping track of the project status

      •     Reviewing completion date and budget and recommending changes as necessary

4.   Demonstrates ability to use the tools required for the job:

      •     Desktop publishing (authoring and delivery) tools, including MadCap Flare, FrameMaker, and Illustrator

      •     Multi-media presentation development tools, including video capture and editing software

      •     Networking tools, including Team Foundation Server (TFS) and SharePoint

      •     Corporate business and manufacturing information tools

5.   Aids in the maintenance of department record-keeping:

      •     Creating and maintaining customer job and documentation project files (on-line and hard copy)

      •     Issuing job/project status reports

      •     Issuing workload status reports

  • Creating and maintaining the job/project quality control records as prescribed by department procedures

      •     Updating document part numbers to reflect current revision levels

•     Assisting in the maintenance of departmental product/system document archives (online and hard copy)

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor's deg. in a technical field, communications or English and 1 year of technical writing exp.; or

Assoc. deg. in English or communications or a vocational-technical certificate in a technical field & 4 yrs. relevant technical or communications experience and 1-year specific technical writing experience for a total of 5 years relevant experience

Knows & uses well the fundamental concepts, practices & procedures of a particular field of specialization.

Performs work that is varied & somewhat difficult in character, but usually involves limited responsibility.  Some evaluation, originality or ingenuity is required

Works under moderate supervision.
